Skin Concerns
Uneven skin tone is all about colour - the light and dark areas, redness or dull patches that make your skin look inconsistent. It can show up as sun spots, post-acne marks, hyperpigmentation or blotchiness, leading to areas that appear darker or less luminous than others1.
Uneven skin texture, on the other hand, is about feel. It’s the roughness you notice when you run your fingers across your face, the tiny bumps, enlarged pores and acne scars that make your foundation sit unevenly, or the fine lines and flakiness that dulls your glow2.
Think of your skin as a painting. Sometimes the colours fade or darken (uneven tone), or the surface cracks or puckers (uneven texture). Just like an artwork, your skin weathers over time, which is both natural and incredibly common, but with the right care, you can keep your skin looking gallery-worthy.
While they may show up differently, skin tone and texture issues often share the same underlying culprits: environmental stressors, lifestyle and even overenthusiastic skincare habits3.
When it comes to brightening uneven skin tone, think fade. The goal isn’t just to lighten dark spots, but to restore the radiance of your skin.
Vitamin C is a strong addition to any brightening routine. This powerful antioxidant helps defend your skin against free radicals (unstable molecules) generated by environmental stressors that can cause pigmentation and other kinds of skin damage5. Over time, vitamin C targets dullness and uneven skin tone to visibly fade dark spots and gives skin that unmistakable lit-from-within glow.
Above all, sunscreen remains your ultimate brightening tool. Without daily sunscreen, UV radiation will continue to trigger pigment production and uneven texture, and undo progress6.
Smoother skin can start with gentle exfoliation and everyday care. Here is what can help:
Chemical exfoliants like AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) are game changers for rough or bumpy skin. AHAs lactic acid and glycolic acid gently exfoliate by dissolving the “glue” holding dull, dead skin cells to the surface revealing a fresher, more even surface underneath7.
Niacinamide earns a second mention here. Beyond brightening tone, it supports the skin barrier which helps keep skin hydrated and plump—essential for a supple, refined texture4.
Hyaluronic acid draws moisture to the skin's surface, which makes skin feel smoother, softer and plumper8.
The key is to go slow and steady. Avoid harsh scrubs that can scratch or irritate the skin’s surface. Like restoring a delicate piece of art—use gentle polish, not aggressive sanding.
A consistent, science-backed routine is the secret to maintaining a bright tone and smooth texture. It’s less about perfection and more about daily maintenance for your skin’s masterpiece. Most importantly, be patient. Revitalising skin takes time, but the glow is worth the wait.
1. Cleanse gently: Start with a low strength AHA cleanser, like Elucent Age Defying Gel Cleanser (with 2% AHAs) on alternate days for gentle exfoliation without stripping your skin barrier.
2. Target concerns: After a couple of weeks and when your skin no longer tingles from the AHA cleanser, add a mid-strength day cream or eye cream like Elucent Age Defying Eye Cream (with 4% AHAs, niacinamide, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid) which helps tackle both pigmentation and texture. Continue to step up in AHA strength every couple of weeks until you reach the level that is right for your skin.
3. Moisturise and protect: Use a moisturiser in the morning such as Elucent Age Defying Day Moisturiser SPF 30*(with 4% AHAs, niacinamide and vitamin E) and again at night such as Elucent Age Defying Night Cream (with 8% AHAs, niacinamide, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid). Hydration enhances skin texture.
* Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear protective clothing, hats and eyewear to further reduce risk. Frequent re-application is required.
4. Brightening breakthrough: For a brighter, more even skin tone, switch your night routine to Elucent Bright & Balanced Night Cream (with 5% niacinamide, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid), or reach for high strength Elucent Bright & Balanced Illuminating Serum (with 10% niacinamide) for visible dark spot reduction.
5. Sunscreen—always*: Finish your morning routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. No matter what else you do, consistent sun protection is non-negotiable. It helps to prevent pigmentation, slows premature ageing and keeps your efforts from going to waste.
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, our skin still needs extra support. If you’ve been consistent for 2-3 months without seeing the results you want, or if you notice severe, persistent or sudden changes, it might be time to see a dermatologist. Persistent dark patches, severe roughness or irritation may need targeted treatments that go beyond over-the-counter options.
Absolutely, but it takes patience and consistency. Evening out your skin tone and texture is less about quick fixes and more about gradual visible change. Think of it as visibly restoring a timeless piece of art, not repainting it overnight.
By understanding the difference between tone and texture, using science-backed ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and AHAs, and protecting your results with sunscreen, you’re giving your skin the tools it needs. The transformation won’t happen in a week, but over time, you’ll notice a smoother texture, a brighter tone and a healthier looking glow that expresses care and balance.
Your skin is your canvas, and every day is a brush stroke in its visible restoration. Treat it gently, nourish it wisely, and watch its natural brilliance return.
